Photodynamic therapy

Currently, Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is one of the most effective technologies in the treatment of malignant neoplasms. However, in recent years, the range of indications for its use has expanded considerably. Dermatology and cosmetology have become promising area. PDT has become one of the advanced methods for solving many dermatocosmetologic problems.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) or photodynamics is a relatively new method of treatment based on the use of medicines — photosensitizers (substances sensitive to light) and low-intensity laser radiation with a wavelength corresponding to the maximum absorption of this substance.

Photodynamic Therapy Technology (PDT)

The main active substance of the photosensitizer gel is the trismeglumin salt of chlorine e6, obtained by extracting chlorophyll «A» from marine microalgae and its subsequent chemical transformation according to the original technology.

The special features of REVIXAN technology are achieved by the specific ability of REVIXAN DERMA photosensitizer gel to easily and deeply penetrate through the skin into the tissues at the sites of gel application and accumulate in the intercellular space and on the walls of damaged cells, without interacting with the healthy surrounding tissues.

The result is the normalization of blood and lymph flow, rheological properties of blood, stimulation of ATP synthesis — the main carrier of energy in the processes occurring in the body; anti-inflammatory, regenerative, analgesic, anti-edemic, desensitizing, and immunomodulatory effects are achieved.

Indications for photodynamic therapy

  • Treatment of involutional skin changes (decreased tone, skin turgor), senile and actinic keratosis;
  • Therapy of structural changes of the skin (oily skin, enlarged pores, acne and post-acne, striae, etc.)
  • Treatment of pigmentation disorders (hyperpigmentation, keratoses, dyschromia, lentiginiosis, etc.)
  • Recovery after invasive procedures of hardware cosmetology (after laser resurfacing and other aggressive procedures)

Areas of PDT application in dermatology

REVIXAN system of photodynamic therapy is indispensable for dermatologists because it produces an immunomodulatory effect and allows effective prevention and treatment of viral and bacterial skin diseases (acne, postacne, herpes) by stimulating the synthesis of intracellular singlet oxygen, which has high chemical and biological activity, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect. At the same time, pathogens do not develop resistance to therapy, which is important in the treatment of chronic infectious processes.

The main dermatological indications for therapy are keratosis, psoriasis, acne and post-acne, onychomycosis, rosacea, couperosis, papillomavirus infections (treatment of warts), hypertrophic, and keloid cicatrixes.

Advantages of photodynamic therapy

  • a limited number of contraindications
  • no systemic complications
  • non-invasiveness, comfort, simplicity, and adaptability;
  • selectivity of exposure — no damage to healthy tissues
  • no side effects, damage and pain during the procedure
  • no rehabilitation period
  • normalization of natural metabolic processes, and mechanisms of skin cell fission
  • activation of the growth of young, healthy cellular structures
  • activation of collagen and elastin synthesis;

Contraindications for the PDT procedure

  • Hypersensitivity to the components of the medicine
  • Pregnancy;
  • Lactation
  • Exacerbation of somatic diseases
  • Retinoid use
  • Use of antibacterial medicines that are photosensitizing
  • Claustrophobia, panic attacks
  • Photophobia

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) procedure

The doctor examines the skin and determines its individual characteristics and phototype. Depending on these data, a certain number of procedures are selected, but as a rule, no less than 4-6. The interval between procedures is 1 week. Before applying REVIXAN DERMA Gel, the skin is thoroughly cleansed with REVIXAN SPUMA Wash Foam.

Afterwards, the gel is applied to the selected area of the skin. The place of application of the gel is massaged with light circular motions. The areas of the skin on which the gel is applied should be covered with a film.

Twenty minutes after application, the gel is washed off with REVIXAN SPUMA Wash Foam.

Light exposure occurs within 15-20 minutes (the duration and type of light exposure is determined by the treating physician).

After the procedure, REVIXAN POST-CREAM is applied to the skin areas that have been exposed to light.

REVIXAN technology can be used both before and after the planned cosmetic procedures (antiviral and antibacterial skin treatment, elimination of inflammation, acceleration of skin regeneration, improvement of blood circulation, preparation of the skin for upcoming procedures)

The number of procedures for each patient is determined individually depending on the disease and the patient’s condition. As a rule, it is 5-6 procedures, then at the discretion of the patient and doctor. With combined treatment, the number of procedures decreases.

The maximum effect appears in 3-4 weeks after the completion of the course of procedures.

The visible effect of the procedures lasts for 1.5-3 years.
