What are laser resurfacing and laser peeling?

We would like to introduce you to the Sciton MicroLaserPeel procedure on the Contour TRL erbium laser, or «weekend peeling».

Contour TRL

The Contour TRL (Tunable Resurfacing Laser) is a dual-mode Erbium laser designed to perform laser skin resurfacing.
The Contour TRL module allows the doctor to adjust the operating parameters according to his / her needs with an accuracy of up to four microns. From ultrasurface peels to full-beam deep laser resurfacing, from 4 to 200 microns in a single pass. Source

The Erbium laser (Er:YAG)  typically emits light with a wavelength of 2940 nm.  The Contour TRL can be used for both MicroLaserPeels® superficial skin resurfacing (from 4 to 50 microns of vaporization) and deep resurfacing (up to 200 microns of vaporization in one pass with different levels of coagulation).

MicroLaserPeel is Sciton’s patented micron-precision laser peel that can remove damaged skin cells to a depth of 4 to 50 microns. Laser peeling does not require special preparation and is performed on an outpatient basis.

Indications for laser peeling

  • Problem skin, when disturbed by comedones, enlarged pores, frequent rashes. In this case, we choose the parameters to remove the excess horny cells. A depth of 5 to 25 microns is sufficient for it. Moreover, we can say with confidence about the accuracy of the impact at a given depth!
  • Pigmented spots — with this problem, the MicroLaserPeel provides immediate results. During laser peeling, the layer of horny cells and some of the epidermal cells with increased melanin content are removed. As a result, the tone of the face is evened out.
  • Superficial wrinkles — depending on the severity of wrinkles, the doctor sets individual parameters of the depth of treatment.
  • Biorevitalization — after MicroLaserPeel the metabolic processes in the skin are activated. The skin becomes pleasantly velvety matte. Dryness and excess of horn cells disappear. This effect is strikingly felt in the fall period of September-October when our skin still «remembers» the effects of the sun’s rays.

MicroLaserPeel refreshes the skin well, makes it more radiant and vibrant, gives it a pleasant matte finish, removes age spots and evens out the face tone, has a short and predictable rehabilitation period (only 4 days). But sometimes this effect is not enough; with more pronounced changes more aggressive technology should be used, such as laser resurfacing on the Sciton Joule platform.

Laser resurfacing

So, what happens during full-beam laser resurfacing? During the procedure, the laser beam with a wavelength of 2940 nm vaporizes the surface layer of the epidermis in a continuous area at varying depths. The laser beam is distributed very precisely over the skin surface with a computer-controlled scanner. The doctor can adjust the level of laser skin ablation (tissue vaporization) and coagulation, achieving the desired effect for a particular patient. The doctor selects all parameters individually.

There are two types of ablative skin rejuvenation: full-field laser resurfacing and fractional rejuvenation.

ProFractional – This laser is manufactured based on customizable fractional TRL technology. It is used for the treatment of various skin lesions. The ProFractional laser is a 2940nm fractional erbium laser that emulates (replicates) the most common ablation lasers through precise control of ablation depth and degree of coagulation.

Laser skin rejuvenation technology

With fractional rejuvenation, the laser beam vaporizes only small areas, creating microchannels in the skin, leaving neighboring tissues intact. This makes the laser exposure deeper and achieves good collagen remodeling (recovery) results both in damaged cells and in adjacent undamaged areas. The presence of adjacent undamaged areas allows the skin to recover faster after the procedure. This makes fractional skin rejuvenation procedures effective and safe. Laser rejuvenation with a fractional laser also reduces the recovery period after the procedure.
